In 2017, Barbara suffered a harrowing fall down a flight of stairs, fracturing her C2 and C3 vertebrae. The medical verdict was not pleasant, as she was told she’d never walk again. According to medical textbooks, she should have been paralyzed from the neck down. However, Barbara’s indomitable spirit refused to accept this prognosis.
- The Road to Recovery
After eight long months of rehabilitation and determination, Barbara began her journey to recovery by attending Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council’s (NBBC) rehabilitation walks at the Pingles Track in Nuneaton. Slowly but steadily, she rebuilt the strength in her legs and arms. Today, she boasts an impressive 99% use of her arms and 95% use of her legs. Her dedication and relentless effort demonstrate what sheer willpower can achieve.
- The Birth of Barbara’s Walking Group
Barbara’s affinity for walking began with her joining NBBC’s walking group back in 2002. Over the years, she had actively participated in numerous walks around the borough. In her own words, the Ramblers wellbeing walks, surrounded by greenery and fresh air, not only aided her physical recovery but also played a pivotal role in her mental wellbeing, particularly after the challenging period of COVID-induced isolation and restrictions.
- Barbara’s Walking Group in Nuneaton
Today, Barbara leads a walking group that meets every Monday at 5 pm from the Pingles Athletics Track. The group warmly welcomes anyone interested in joining, with a special focus on those with additional needs and disabilities. The location is ideal for beginners as it offers a flat track, allowing people to start with just one lap and gradually build their walking stamina.
Though the group experienced a drop in members following the pandemic, it has since been restructured into two smaller groups, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, ensuring flexibility for all participants.

The walking group’s primary aim is to support individuals in their journey to improved fitness and wellbeing. Barbara, having experienced her own remarkable recovery, knows the importance of maintaining fitness.
