Every movement counts: New UK physical activity guidelines show small steps can make a big impact

Think Active has welcomed new updates to the UK’s physical activity guidelines which reinforce a simple but powerful message: every movement counts.

Last month, the UK Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) released updates to the national physical activity guidelines which emphasise even small increases in movement can boost health and wellbeing, whether it’s as simple as walking to the shops, taking the stairs or stepping away from work desks more often.

Drawing on the latest evidence, the renewed CMO guidelines highlight how physical activity can help improve physical health, mental wellbeing and overall quality of life for people of all ages, with the greatest benefits felt by those who are currently least active.

"Whether it’s walking with friends, joining a community activity, doing household tasks or simply sitting less and moving more, the smallest of steps all add up over time."

While the new guidelines still recommend adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week alongside activities to build strength and balance, there is greater emphasis on cutting down sedentary time and how any level of activity is better than none – and more is better still.

The guidance also reflects new research that shows the benefits of physical activity greatly outweigh the risks, even for people with long-term health conditions. Featuring tailored recommendations for groups such as children and young people, pregnant women, older and disabled people, it demonstrates there are safe and appropriate ways for everyone to be active when starting at a comfortable level and building up gradually.

As well as supporting individuals, the refreshed guidelines provide information to help give health and care professionals, volunteers and community organisations greater confidence in having positive conversations about physical activity, helping more people move in ways that work for them.

Sarah Taylor, Head of Health at Think Active, said: “One of the most positive things about the latest guidance is that it reminds us how being active is about finding simple ways to move more that work for each person.

“Across Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire, we see every day how even small changes can improve people’s confidence, wellbeing and quality of life. Whether it’s walking with friends, joining a community activity, doing household tasks or simply sitting less and moving more, the smallest of steps all add up over time.”

Infographics have been produced with tailored recommendations for different groups

To help bring the CMO guidelines to life, a series of easy-to-follow infographics have been produced for different age groups and life stages, alongside the full report explaining the evidence behind the refreshed recommendations.
